two distillation column

Did you ever wonder how crude oil is refined into multiple liquids? It’s pretty interesting! We call this distillation. Distillation is a way to separate liquid parts of mixture using heat and cooling. This is like making something, then letting it cool out to see what leftover. This is done using a technique called two-column distillation that has been shown to increase the effectiveness of this process.

In the two-column distillation method, there are double tall structures called distillation columns. These columns are also sometimes referred to as towers or pipes. Both touch at the bottom and both come together on top, where a continuous system has been formed to aid in moving liquids. Each column has two or more packing, sometimes called trays. These packings slow liquid and gas flow, that is to say facilitate their separation. Imagine that as a set of steps where the liquids can slowly separate themselves.

    Dual Distillation Columns Explained

We put the crude in at the bottom of our first column where we heat it up. The hot heat causes the crude oil to vaporize and turns it into a vapour, similar to steam. The hot vapor passes up the column and condenses on to packing or trays in the way. The heaviest in the liquid form (liquid with a lower alcohol percentage, aromas and flavor) cools down first and flows back to the bottom. Meanwhile, we take the bottom liquids out in another vessel. Similar to heavy things that sink when put in a pool

Less dense, lighter liquids keep moving up the column. Finally they would teeter over its edge and then enter the next collumn. Column two This is similar to the first column, only that packing or trays are oriented differently. So hopefully this different set up helps make the juice whatever more polished.
